What do Radek Sali, CEO of Swisse, and Debby Blakey, CEO of Hesta, and Una Jagose, Solicitor General of New Zealand, and Mathew Pullinger, Principal of Hassell and Amanda Sinclair, Professorial Fellow and Distinguished Author at Melbourne Business School, have in common? They and many others are all praising the leadership work of Richard Searle and his new book Leadership On Top.
Leadership On Top shares powerful ideas, methods and lessons which have been used by thousands of senior managers and others who have been influenced by Richard Searle to become effective and fulfilled leaders of their businesses and organizations. Richard argues that human beings and human organizations have an intrinsic ability to be adaptive, cooperative and inventive – something which is sorely needed in business and society right now - but it requires the exercise of leadership and the guidance of effective leadership development to bring this out.
Richard Searle is Director of management education consultancy Leaders & Searle, and for twenty years he has been a full time faculty member and now Associate with Melbourne Business School Executive Education and formerly Mt Eliza Executive Education. He has worked with some of the best companies in the Asia Pacific Region and for the past decade he designed and led the flagship senior leadership program for MBS Executive Education. Richard is educated at Harvard University, and he has been a Consultant to the World Bank and a Senior Ministerial Advisor to the Victorian Government.
In Leadership On Top Richard argues that “leadership may not have as much to do with authority or technique or glamour as is the fashion to portray, but it may have more to do with work, courage and improvisation. Leadership may just happen to be one of the most demanding and fulfilling activities going around”. Most other leadership books provide lots of anecdotes and pithy rules but they do not provide much practical guidance or a reliable development process that managers and others can actually follow.
In Leadership On Top you will hear the voices of amazing leaders who have learnt from Richard and who contribute their profound insights to this book. Leadership On Top contains great stories which combine illumination, inspiration and humour.
Amanda Sinclair from MBS says: “In this collection, Richard Searle brings clarity, humour and profound wisdom to the challenges and opportunities of leadership”.
Radek Sali from Swisse says: “In the future, pioneering programs like this will become pre-requisites for leadership”.
Debby Blakey from HESTA says “It was a significant turning point for me in terms of having the confidence to trust my instinct and lead”
“Richard Searle MC/MPA, HKSEE 2004 recently published a book called Leadership On Top: How Managers and Others Become Leaders. This was influenced by his time at HKS and the 20 years he has spent as a management educator, primarily with Melbourne Business School Executive Education” - Harvard Kennedy School Magazine, Winter 2017
