According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) 1/3 of the world is well fed, 1/3 over feed and 1/3 starving. As the population grows, control of food production resources (arable land; water, technology, IP and distribution channels) will influence international geopolitical power. As the power base of the US and Europe diminishes, their ability to influence world affairs will reduce.

But what about this for an idea - vertical farming?
